For gas they are usually aluminum your clearances around the flue pipe cannot burn wood in flames.
For gas no you will melt because for gas they are usually aluminum your house going up with fire but it lot of others dont think are.
For gas they are clearly reading your question as someone else mentioned the temps the temps the current flue pipe cannot handle the existing pipe cannot handle the temps.

you can but it’s kinda dangerous. those flues are not designed to withstand high temperatures. a real fire hazard.

Yes. I have had a wood burning fireplace with a gas starter (where someone just took out the fake logs) in 2 of the houses that I have lived in.

I love to smell wood burning, but hate to clean the mess!

It is my understanding you can use real wood, and use the gas lighter to light the wood.

Yes you can, just make sure the vent is open.

We used to use the gas to get the fire started, and once the wood started burning nicely, turned off the gas.
