How can i estimate the % of methanol and water from a simple/fractional distillation?

methanol distillation
madeulo0k asked:

Started out with 60 ml of the mixture. I represented graphically against the volume graph of temperature. Now I have to evaluate just how much of each I have a solution. thanks!

  1. George F Says:

The boiling point of pure methanol is 64.7 degrees C at 760 torr.

    The refractive index is 1.3292

The Bp of water is 100 degrees C at 760 torr and the refractive index is 1.3330.

You could try to plot the bp of water and methanol and hope that there is a linear relationship between bpt of mixtures and % volume.

Plot % volume on the x axis and the bpt of metahnol and water and the mixture on the y axis.

There is a linear relationship between refractive index and % volume using refractive index.
