Does converting a diesel engine to burn both fuel and vegetable oil significantly reduce the emissions?

I just bought a large vehicle that has a diesel engine of the 4-cylinder that gets great fuel economy but I want to do more. I already had in store to help reduce the smoke that occasionally make it but I have seen any people who have converted the vehicle to burn diesel SIA that the veggie oil. Dose anyone know if this alternative fuel actually reduces my other emissions? It appeals to us out there to do the conversion myself? Thanx!
